Every zodiac sign carries two labels beyond its name: an element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water) and a modality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable). Together they give each sign a unique pair, and they are the two inputs behind every score on this site.
The four elements
Each element is shared by exactly three signs, spaced four signs apart around the wheel.
| Element | Signs | Short description | |---|---|---| | Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Energy, drive, enthusiasm | | Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Practical, steady, grounded | | Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Ideas, talk, social | | Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Feeling, intuition, depth |
Fire
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are described in tradition as quick to start, warm and direct. Fire signs are said to act first and think later.
Earth
Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are linked to patience, routine and results you can touch. Tradition calls them the builders.
Air
Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the thinkers and connectors. They are said to prefer conversation, balance and new ideas.
Water
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are tied to emotion, memory and intuition. Tradition describes them as the most sensitive group.
The three modalities
Modality describes how a sign behaves within its season. Each season has one Cardinal sign to open it, one Fixed sign in the middle and one Mutable sign to close it.
| Modality | Signs | Role in the season | |---|---|---| | Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Starts things | | Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Holds things steady | | Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Adapts and changes |
Cardinal signs begin each season: Aries in spring, Cancer in summer, Libra in autumn and Capricorn in winter (northern hemisphere). Fixed signs sit in the middle and are linked with persistence. Mutable signs come at the end and are linked with flexibility.
Why the pair matters
Because there are four elements and three modalities, 4 x 3 = 12, so no two signs share the same pair. Aries is Fire plus Cardinal. Leo is Fire plus Fixed. Sagittarius is Fire plus Mutable. When you meet someone of the same element, you share a temperament. When you share a modality, you share a pace.
Quick check: Virgo is Earth plus Mutable. Capricorn is Earth plus Cardinal. Same element, different modality, so tradition says similar values with a different way of moving.
How elements and modalities set the score
Our compatibility function is deliberately simple and fully published. Read the whole method in How compatibility is scored. In short:
Element base score
- Same element: 80
- Fire and Air: 85
- Earth and Water: 85
- Fire and Earth: 45
- Fire and Water: 40
- Earth and Air: 50
- Air and Water: 55
Modality adjustment
- Same modality: minus 5
- Different modality: plus 5
- A sign paired with itself gets no adjustment, so same-sign pairs score 75.
The idea behind the numbers is the classical one: Fire feeds on Air, and Earth is held by Water, so those pairs start high. Fire and Water, or Fire and Earth, are said to pull in different directions, so they start lower.
Worked examples
- Aries and Leo: both Fire, base 80. Cardinal and Fixed differ, so plus 5. Score 85.
- Aries and Libra: Fire and Air, base 85. Both Cardinal, so minus 5. Score 80.
- Aries and Taurus: Fire and Earth, base 45. Cardinal and Fixed differ, plus 5. Score 50.
- Cancer and Scorpio: both Water, base 80. Cardinal and Fixed differ, plus 5. Score 85.
Notice that two signs with the same name pair types can land far apart. The element does most of the work, and the modality nudges it by five points either way.
Reading a result sensibly
Scores fall into four bands: 80 and above is strong, 65 to 79 is good, 50 to 64 is mixed and below 50 is challenging. A challenging score does not mean a relationship cannot work. It marks the pairs that tradition says need more effort. This is entertainment, and no formula knows two real people.
Find your own pair
- Look up your sign in the calculator or in What is a zodiac sign.
- Note your element and modality from the tables above.
- Pick a partner, friend or colleague and open their pair page from the compatibility picker.
If your birthday is on a boundary day, check Zodiac cusp signs first, since a one-day shift changes both labels at once.
