Your sun sign comes from where the sun was on your birthday. Your Vedic rashi comes from where the Moon was at your birth, so it needs your birth time. They often differ, which is why a date-only calculator can give an answer that feels wrong to someone raised on Indian astrology.
The core difference
| | Sun sign (Western) | Rashi (Vedic) | |---|---|---| | Based on | Position of the sun | Position of the Moon | | Needs | Day and month | Date, exact time and place | | Zodiac reference | Tropical, tied to the seasons | Sidereal, tied to the stars | | Changes every | About 30 days | About 2.25 days | | Common name | Star sign, sun sign | Rashi, Moon sign, janma rashi |
This site is a sun-sign calculator. It uses the Western twelve signs and standard calendar dates. When we show a result, we also say: your Vedic rashi is based on the Moon and needs your birth time.
Why the Moon changes the answer
The sun spends roughly a month in each sign. The Moon circles the whole zodiac in about 27 days, so it spends only about two and a quarter days in each sign. That means two people born on the same date can have different Moon signs, and you cannot work out a Moon sign without the hour of birth.
A Moon sign also needs the right zodiac. Western astrology measures from the spring equinox. Vedic astrology measures from fixed stars, and the two reference points have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees, called the ayanamsa. That is nearly a full sign, so even the sun's position often lands in the previous sign in the Vedic system.
What the Hindi names are
The twelve rashis map one to one onto the twelve Western signs by name.
| Western sign | Rashi | |---|---| | Aries | Mesha (मेष) | | Taurus | Vrishabha (वृषभ) | | Gemini | Mithuna (मिथुन) | | Cancer | Karka (कर्क) | | Leo | Simha (सिंह) | | Virgo | Kanya (कन्या) | | Libra | Tula (तुला) | | Scorpio | Vrischika (वृश्चिक) | | Sagittarius | Dhanu (धनु) | | Capricorn | Makara (मकर) | | Aquarius | Kumbha (कुंभ) | | Pisces | Meena (मीन) |
The names match, but the sign you land in usually does not. Someone who is Leo by sun sign could be Cancer, Leo or Virgo by rashi, depending on the Moon.
Worked example
Take someone born on 10 August, around mid-morning in Delhi. Their sun sign is Leo, because 10 August sits inside 23 July to 22 August. Their Moon might have been in a completely different sign that day. A Vedic chart cast for that exact time and place could return, say, Kanya or Tula as the rashi. The calculator cannot know that, because it never asks for time or place.
This is also why parents and elders may say "your rashi is Dhanu" when an app says you are Scorpio. Both can be correct. They answer different questions.
How to find your Vedic rashi
- Gather your date, exact time and city of birth. Your birth certificate or hospital record usually has the time.
- Use a Vedic (sidereal) chart calculator or ask a trusted astrologer. Make sure the tool says it uses Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India.
- Read the sign next to "Moon" or "Chandra" in the chart. That is your janma rashi.
- If you do not have your birth time, you can only narrow it down. The Moon stays in a sign for about 54 hours, so one date gives at most two or three possible rashis.
Is my sun sign useless then?
No. Sun signs are fun and widely shared, and they work well for quick conversation. Each of the 12 sign pages has an "Is this my rashi?" answer to catch exactly this confusion. If you want the sun sign for a birthday, the calculator is built for that, and the month pages show every date at a glance.
Just do not treat it as your Vedic identity. When someone asks "what is your rashi" at a wedding or in a family chat, they almost always mean the Moon sign.
Does compatibility work the same way?
Not quite. Our pair scores use sun-sign elements and modalities, and tradition-based Indian matching, called ashtakoot or guna milan, looks at the Moon sign and birth star instead. Think of our result as a light conversation starter, and treat formal matching as a separate process done with the right data and a qualified astrologer.
Another source of difference: boundaries
If your birthday is on the first or last day of a sun sign, read Zodiac cusp signs. Boundary days make even the sun sign uncertain without a birth time, and the Moon is far more sensitive again.
Quick summary
- Sun sign needs a date. Rashi needs a date, time and place.
- The Moon moves about 13 times faster than the sun through the signs.
- Different zodiac references mean the same-named sign is not always the same sector of sky.
- Our tool shows the sun sign and says so clearly. For your rashi, use a Vedic chart tool.
